5 Powerful Expressions To Counterbalance a Narcissist
Narcissists are charming people with a lot of social support around them and it’s not that easy to counterbalance them. They have many faces and do not consider themselves to be narcissists but simply magical and delightful.
In the beginning, narcissists gather people’s admiration to boost their ego. They make themselves relevant in their life and thus difficult to be ever confronted. But there are possible ways in which a narcissist can be neutralized. There are 5 affirmative methods that you can adopt to keep them within limits.
1. Narcissists can be neutralized with one word—“no”
Narcissists want people to agree with everything that they say and to think the way they think. This is their way to control, influence, and execute power on others.
Do not agree with a narcissist to make them realize that they can’t possibly think you to be ignorant. Assertively say “no” and distance yourself from their ideas.
2. Give me a proof!
Narcissists are perpetual liars and they alter their narrative to pull down others or bring themselves to the center. Hence, almost everything that they say is either an exaggerated or a diminished version of a situation.
If you detect a narcissist lying to you, bring up counterarguments that question their story. Ask for evidence to support their narration. This behavior of yours will make them realize that you will not accept everything that they say.
3. You’re exactly like everyone else—neither more nor less
Either obviously, or implicitly, narcissists believe that they’re superior to others. They convince people around them that they’re more accomplished, intelligent, or well placed.
A good idea is to tell them that while they may be skilled in certain ways, others also have different talents. And training can make anyone skilled in that area. Most importantly, let them know that it’s perfectly fine to have certain abilities and not to have others.
4. You don’t scare me
To counterbalance a narcissist, the best method to adopt is to show them that you’re not scared of them. They closely observe others and use their insecurities to turn it against them. They highlight other’s flaws to further their inferiorities.
Brushing away their words or not reacting to their attacks is a way to show them that you’re not afraid of them. Let their anger not affect you, you don’t have to deal with it. By showing how they do not intimidate you, you will neutralize them.
5. Stick to the subject
The moment a narcissist realizes that they’re on the wrong, they’ll divert the subject elsewhere. This would mean accepting their defeat in front of someone else and they can’t let that happen. Be vigilant because they’ll try to manipulate the attention away from the topic of concern.
If you’re close to them, you must understand that they’ll never let you settle on the core argument. Don’t let them confuse you; instead slowly bring them back to the important points in the conversation. Let them know that you know what they’re doing and they won’t manipulate you.
It’s certainly not easy to counterbalance a narcissist. You have to draw all your courage and audacity to let them understand that they cannot control you. The main problem is that they do not love themselves, even though they won’t accept it. Hence, they reverse this feeling onto someone else and watch them being victimized.
