This Blooming Onion recipe is really easy to make. There are a few tricks that will help you prepare this amazing appetizer. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, you are going to make this amazing recipe again and again.
The Blooming Onion Recipe:
- 1 large white onion
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp. paprika
- 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. oregano
- Some salt and pepper to taste
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 quart vegetable oil
- Dipping sauce of your choice
In a medium bowl, add the flour, spices, salt and pepper and mix everything well until combined. Set aside. Take another bowl and add the eggs and milk. Whisk them until combined and set aside.
Cut off ½-inch from the pointy end of the onion while leaving the other end of root intact. Then remove the papery skin. Take a cutting board and place the onion cut-side down. Cut it vertically with a sharp knife, starting ¾-inch from the root. Repeat vertical cuts downward about 1/2-inch apart on the edge, taking care not to overlap with previous cuts. You should get around 10-15 cuts in total. Once you are done cutting, turn the onion over and gently open up the “petals” using your fingers, until it becomes a flower. Set aside.
Dip the onion flower first in the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture. Return onion to the flour mixture one more time and cover completely. Place the onion on a plate and put it in the fridge to freeze for 30-60 min until set.
Prepare a deep saucepan and heat it to 350°F. Line a plate with paper towel and set aside. Fry onion for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Turn them over occasionally.
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
