Lying Down With Your Kids Until They Fall Asleep Is Not A Bad Habit
All mothers have spent night after night sleeping beside their kids, sometimes sleepless and fidgety herself waiting for the moment for her child to fall asleep. Mothers, although restless stay beside their kids on bed, either trying to spend time on their phones while hiding under the blanket so that the light doesn’t disturb him/her.
This is a daunting task in itself. Some nights she just sits with a bowl of popcorn or icecream waiting for her child to sleep so that she can continue with her household errands after that. But sometimes it is absolutely a beautiful feeling to lay there and watch your child go off to sleep. Motherhood is a phenomenal experience and with it comes the little joys like these.
It’s like a warm affection, to nestle with your kids, stroke your fingers through their hair while they cuddle with you, you sniff the smell of their hair, feel the warmth of his cheeks against your neck and observe his tiny little heart beating. Yes, motherhood is indeed beautiful.
It was a completely wrong notion that sleeping with your kids besides you is a bad habit. Now when we realise how sublime the feeling is. As a mother you can rock and nurse your baby kid, roam around with him on your shoulders until he falls asleep.
But as the baby boy grows up, sometimes you need to pat his back or hold his hands while singing a song to make him to go sleep. This is not harmful in anyway. But even if they have grown up to be big boys, what if they ask you to come and lie there for all the love he has for you, is it wrong?
Now some may raise the issue of independence. Shouldn’t children be allowed to practice sleeping alone so that the time when you’re physically not there to lay down beside him, he can self soothe himself?
The answer will however prove all your notions wrong. Several studies reveal that the more your child is attached to you, the faster he learns to be self dependent and gains a strong ground to stand on. Mother’s love renders security and warmth which enables a kid to blossom as a powerful human being. Security gives them confidence and a sense of maturity.
Although there are many other ways to raise a secure independent child than simply lying on bed with him but this is one of the prerequisites. Because these countable minutes will mean the world to them, to feel your closeness makes them feel loved. Such moments, between all the hustle bustle of homework, eating lunch, doing projects, playing and arguing, are when you connect with your child deeply and in a much quieter and peaceful manner.
He needs his mother on days he is frustrated from a lot of stress, is anxious or restless. Mothers should lie with their kids so that they can easily open up to you about his thoughts and rants. Sometimes it is tougher but every minute is worth it. And no mother will ever trade that feeling for anything else in the World.
