Why Women of 40 and 50 are the New ‘Ageless Generation’
What does it mean to be a woman in her 50s? A family van? Soccer mom? Signs of ageing? No knowledge about wi-fi and no interest in memes? While that may have been the case two decades back, the 50 year olds of today have become legends in their own rights. They are no worse than our millennials, screaming for queer rights, and gun laws.
While women in Hollywood have perpetuated the appearance of a 50 year old as amazingly beautiful like Monica Bellucci, Salma Hayek and Marisa Tomei, the normal citizens of the country who are above the age of 50 have decided to upgrade themselves in a way that they look half their age, which would invariably allow them to mix in with the brash twenty year olds at pubs and have a drink.
According to a survey recently conducted, women over the ages of 40 and in their mid-50s don’t feel that they have aged a lot. In fact, they believe that they have just blossomed out of their cocoon. The ‘cool mom’ phenomenon has given rise to the ‘cool woman’. These women have defied the society’s rules of behaving in a way that would acknowledge them as ‘old’ and simply started to live their lives in a way that would remind them of their own youth.
Several women have been surprised at the generalization and appropriation that they have been going through. The patriarchal concept of a woman deciding to retire after a certain age has met with several outrage as these women are going through a complete transformation all the while documenting their life story on social media, be it glamorous pictures of Sun tanned Miami, or the wildlife of Arizona, these women are killin’ it.
The latest reports suggests that these women aren’t trying to act like twenty year olds, but rather working out, and working on their own body, so as to feel like they are at the time of their youth. They are coming into their own right, respecting themselves while looking into the mirror, and respecting other women.
They are getting jobs, and some of them are at the peak of their careers, while others are getting more and more interested and equipped in doing whatever it is that they love to do. Also, these women are turning out to be self-confident, doing what they love, without bothering with suggestions or criticisms from people all around. To them, they matter, regardless of what the country might say.
Women like Elizabeth Hurley, Sarah Jessica Parker have revolutionized what a 50 year old looks like. From a hunchback, with gray streaks, and drooping cheeks and webbed lines on their faces, the image has shifted to women with a 6 pack, flaunting them proudly at some beach. The world has been through an upgrade, and women have spearheaded it.
So, it is time that people give these 50 year old youths a cheer, and the respect that they deserve. For these people would turn 50 one day, too.
